Sometime ago Wellesley visited Yitshar Blends to have a chat with Ms. Maline about the ram goat dash along. Ms Maline is well-versed in our Jamaican herbs and had a wealth of knowledge to share. She even explained to us the different categories of herbs and why The Ram goat Dash Along is considered a herb. She even shared with us the importance of boiling our herbs to get the full benefits and not just simply steeping them in hot water. Of course, I will be adding the video below for you to watch.
The Jamaican Ram Goat Dash Along, scientifically known as Turnera diffusa, is a small shrub native to the Central and South America region, the Caribbean included. The herb has a long history of use among the indigenous people of these regions, where it was valued for its medicinal properties and aphrodisiac effects.
Traditionally, the Damiana herb was used to alleviate various ailments, such as anxiety, depression, and digestive issues. Additionally, it was hailed for its ability to enhance sexual function and boost libido, earning it a reputation as a potent aphrodisiac.
The name "Ram Goat Dash Along" is an intriguing title for this herb, often capturing the curiosity of those unfamiliar with it. This unique name is derived from Jamaican folklore, where it is believed that the herb has the power to imbue the drinker with the vigour and stamina of a ram goat, enabling them to "dash along" with renewed energy and vitality.
One of the most well-known uses of the Damiana herb is its role as a natural aphrodisiac. It is believed to stimulate blood flow to the genital region, thereby enhancing libido and sexual performance. While scientific research is limited, anecdotal evidence suggests its potential effectiveness in this regard. Ms Maline even pointed out that it is not just for better sexual performance in men as it also helps to prevent dryness in women. Maybe why it gained the nickname โhorny goat weedโ.
Damiana is thought to have mild anxiolytic and mood-lifting properties. In traditional medicine, it has been used to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and mild depression. Ms Maline also mentioned that back in the day the Ram-goat Dash Along was used similarly to marijuana and many used to smoke it. However, because it lacks THC when smoked it would not get you high.
The herb is believed to have mild digestive stimulant properties, which could aid in easing indigestion and supporting overall digestive health.
Many traditional users of Damiana believe it to be an energy-enhancing herb, helping combat fatigue and lethargy.
Similarly to many of our natural herbs and remedies found here in Jamaica, no extensive research has been conducted on the Ram Goat Dash Along, but despite that, the long history of its successful use on our island and others is all the evidence needed, at least in my opinion.
As with any herbal remedy, caution is advised, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or have underlying health conditions. It is always best to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating Damiana supplements or products into your routine. Also, avoid taking the herb if you have an upcoming surgery and never exceed doses of 250g.
The Jamaican Ram Goat Dash Along, or Damiana herb, is a fascinating and culturally significant plant deeply rooted in our Jamaican tradition. Its diverse medicinal uses, historical significance, and aphrodisiac properties have piqued the interest of both locals and visitors alike. While its benefits have been revered for centuries, more scientific research is required to fully understand the herb's potential and ensure its safe usage in modern times. Until then, its legacy as an integral part of Jamaican heritage and traditional healing practices continues to endure.
