Day 7 for team Jamaica at the Paris Olympics 2024 was an exciting and history-making one. Who would have thought that Jamaica, known for producing some of the world’s greatest sprinters, would secure our first gold for the Olympics 2024 through a field sport?

Let’s see what our athletes did on their day 7 at the Paris Olympics.

1. The Events:

Men’s 110m Hurdles Semi-finals
Jamaica will have 3 competitors in the men’s 110m hurdles final! Rasheed Broadbell won his semi-final with a time of 13.21s and will be participating in the finals. Hansle Parchment made it through his semi-final with a season’s best of 13.19s and Orlando Bennett won his semi-final with a time of 13.09s.

Men’s 400m hurdles semi-finals
Roshawn Clarke secured for Jamaica a spot in the men’s 400m hurdles final with his time of 48.34s. Jaheel Hyde came 7th in his semi-final with a time of 50.03s and the same goes for Malik James-King who also placed 7th with a time of 48.85s; both men did not make the finals.

Men’s Discus Throw Finals
It was the first goal for Jamaica at the Paris Olympics thanks to Roje Stona with a throw of 70.00m. Stona's tremendous throw in the fourth round propelled him from sixth to first place and broke the Olympic record of 69.89 meters set by Lithuanian Virgilijus Alekna in the 2004 Games in Athens, France.

Ralford Mullings finished ninth with 65.61m, just failing to get three additional throws, while Traves Smikle was 10th with 64.97m.

Men’s Triple Jump Semi-finals
With a jump of 16.99m, Jayden Hibbert secured his spot in the men's triple jump finals after finishing third in Group B.

Women’s 400m Semi-finals
Junelle Bromfield, Nickisha Pryce, and Stacey-Ann Williams did not qualify for the final of the women's 400m at the Paris Games. In semi-final one, Bromfield finished in eighth place with a time of 51.93. Pryce, the reigning national champion, crossed the line fourth in semi-final two with a time of 50.77, while Williams finished seventh in semi-final three, posting a time of 50.79.

2. Athlete Highlights:

    Roje didn’t just give us our first goal medal for the Olympic Games 2024, he gave us our first-ever Olympic record in the sport. A double historic moment.

Silver: 3
Bronze: 1

Closing Note:

Roje shocked us all today, in a great way. As Jamaicans we normally dominate in the track and field events, but Roje and other field athletes have been showing us that we need to start showing more love and support to all our athletes.
