We have produced not just the fastest woman alive Elaine Thompson-Herah, but also the fastest man alive, Usain Bolt, and a slew of other record-breaking athletes Shelly An Fraser Pryce, Asafa Powell, Veronica Campbell and so many others.

To date, we have won a total of 87 Olympic medals, 86 of which have been in athletics and another in cycling. And boy oh boy, am I looking forward to us securing some more medals and breaking even more records, if that is even possible.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are officially underway, beginning with a groundbreaking the opening ceremony on July 26, 2024. Things are a little different, since the ceremony took place not in a stadium but on the iconic River Seine.

There were over 10,000 athletes and performers parading on boats along a 6-kilometre (3.7-mile) route, which started at the Austerlitz Bridge near the Jardin des Plantes and concluded at the Trocadero.

Jamaica's Position and Flag Bearers

Of the 205 nations participating in the Parade of Nations on a range of floats cruising down the Seine, Greece was at the lead as they have been doing since the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics because they are considered to be the originators of the Olympics. Jamaica was in position 92 of the parade.

Our pride and joy triple jumper Shanieka Ricketts along with swimmer Josh Kirlew had the honor of carrying the Jamaican flag.

Ricketts, the first jumper and field athlete to serve as flag bearer, expressed her excitement and pride, seeing this role as a trailblazing moment for field events in Jamaica.

She hopes her role as a flag bearer will inspire young athletes to pursue field events and excel at the highest levels, breaking away from the traditional focus on sprinting.
