Is Jamaica a country?
Why, yes it is! The beautiful Caribbean country that is Jamaica has been an independently governed country since 1962. The country is home to approximately 3 million people.
It is one of the largest islands in the Caribbean which together are called the Greater Antilles.
Is Jamaica near the USA?
Jamaica is only 2769 kilometres away from the United States. To put it into context, a flight from Jamaica to Florida takes just under 2 hours, which is shorter than it takes to travel from one end of Jamaica to the next by car.
What country is Jamaica ruled by?
Jamaica was once a colony of Britain however, it is now a constitutional monarchy with The King of England as Sovereign. The monarch of the United Kingdom is represented on the island by a Governor-General appointed on the advice of the Jamaican Prime Minister. The current governor-general is Sir Patrick Allen.
Jamaica is one of the 16 members of the Commonwealth. These are independent countries that were once colonies of the United Kingdom and are now constitutional monarchies or overseas territories.
What state does Jamaica belong to?
The island of Jamaica is not part of any state in the United States of America, however, Jamaica is the name of a neighbourhood in Queens, New York.
Is Jamaica an overseas territory of the USA?
No. There are Caribbean countries that are overseas territories of the USA but Jamaica is not one of them. These countries are Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Do you need a passport to go to Jamaica from the US?
Yes, a passport is required for entry into Jamaica for everyone. Travelling from the United States to any of their overseas territories would not require a passport as you would technically still be in the US. But you must possess a passport to enter Jamaica seeing as it is not an overseas territory of the USA.
Is Jamaica governed by the United States?
No, Jamaica is not governed by the United States nor is Jamaica geographically or politically a part of the African continent.
Can Jamaicans stay in the US?
Yes, should Jamaicans possess the necessary documents to enter the country, they may be granted access to the United States. There is a large population of Jamaicans in the USA who have migrated for various reasons including educational and career opportunities.
Is Montego Bay a US territory?
No, Montego Bay is not a US territory. It is a city on the island of Jamaica known for its resorts, beaches and sunshine which attracts scores of tourists to the island each year.
