It definitely isn’t expensive to travel to Jamaica. In fact, Jamaica is one of the cheaper islands in the Caribbean. While there can be expensive options, Jamaica provides options for accommodation, meals and excursions suited for different budgets.
What are the expenses to consider when coming to Jamaica?
For your trip to Jamaica, you will have to consider the cost of airfare, hotel, excursions, meals, transportation and souvenirs.
Airfare can either be quite affordable or very expensive depending on quite a few factors. Firstly, will you be travelling alone or, with your family? No matter the cost of the flight, if you have a large family it will be expensive.
It also depends on the distance you are travelling. Since Jamaica is relatively close to the USA, specifically Miami, flights are generally cheaper than those coming from Europe for example.
The level of comfort you are willing to pay for affects the cost of your ticket as well. Naturally, first-class tickets will cost more than economy or business class.
Another factor that may drive up ticket costs is the airline you choose to travel with. There are several airlines with great rates to Jamaica. You can find them with a little digging.
The final reason for expensive flights is the season you are flying in. If it is the off-season, then flights will be far less expensive than during the winter months when many persons are travelling to Jamaica.
In December the prices for basic economy tickets can be between USD 500 and USD 700. The closer it gets to the Christmas period the more expensive the flights will be. Usually, by January continuing into spring, the cost of flights is an average of USD 300.
Aside from getting to Jamaica, the next most expensive thing is accommodation. All-inclusive are usually the go-to as there are various options for families, couples and singles ranging from luxury to budget-friendly.
Again, the cost of hotel accommodation is affected by the season. During high season, the cost of rooms and suites at all hotels increases. It is often advised that you book early to take advantage of the lower prices.
The average cost of an all-inclusive is 200-300 per person per night. Luxury options will be USD 800 to well over USD 1000 per person per night.
But if you are hoping for alternative accommodations, villas, guest houses and Airbnb are great options.
Guest houses are the cheapest as you will get a single room, restroom, and kitchenette (in some cases). The average cost is USD 50 to 100 per night. Food and drink are not included.
With Airbnbs and Villas, the prices fluctuate depending on the level of luxury and the amenities you want. Private, staffed villas will cost more. For most villas, you must call to request the dates or make reservations.
If you plan on going on excursions, then it is best to budget for these as well. Excursions in Jamaica, such as falls, rivers and beaches usually cost USD 20 to USD 40 for admission. With tours like Chukka and Island Routes, you’ll have to pay $USD 90 onwards for group packages for adventure.
If you are staying at an all-inclusive then food should not be an issue since food is included in the cost. But eating out in Jamaica is not expensive either. The average meal is USD 5-10. For more upscale restaurants and those in the resort area, it will be more expensive.
For most, transportation is through travel companies such as JUTA, Maxi and independent tour operators. If you will be here for an extended period, then public transportation is an option. But, for convenience, you can rent a vehicle as well.
Souvenirs shouldn’t take much of your budget but it would be good to set aside some money for them. Souvenirs can be as cheap as USD 3 or as expensive as USD 100 or more. The cheapest gifts are usually jewellery, keychains and clothes.
What is the cheapest time to visit Jamaica?
The cheapest time to visit Jamaica is during the low season in the spring and summer months.
Why is travelling to Jamaica so expensive?
A trip to Jamaica is not expensive especially if you plan and prepare for your trip correctly.
