By now, you have probably heard of some of the more popular brands like Appleton and Wray and Nephew. But have you heard of the Hampden Estate Jamaican Rum? You will probably be surprised to hear how long they have been around.
Hampden Rum is made in Trelawny, Jamaica at the Hampden Estate's distillery.
Thomas Goddard, a surveyor, conducted the first survey of Hampden in 1684. Hampden, established in 1743, was a sizable sugar plantation run by Mr Archibald Stirling of Scotland around 1753. He constructed the Hampden Great House in 1779, and from that time until the early 1900s, the ground floor housed a rum store.
After 1827, D.O. Kelly-Lawson, who later became the Custos of St. James and a Justice of the Peace in Trelawny, acquired the land. After his daughter Ena Kelly-death, Lawson's Hampden was inherited by her husband, Mr. Farquharson. The famous "Queen of Spain Valley renowned "'s "Queen of Spain Valley" estate spans over 3500 acres.
Up until 2003, when the Jamaica Sugar Company of Jamaica acquired possession of the plantation, the Farquharson's owned and ran it as a sugar and rum-producing estate. The estate is well known for having Jamaica's best cane lands and generating the most sugar per ton of milled cane.
Its rums were only shipped to Scotland, England and other parts of Europe during this period.
A public auction in 2009 turned ownership of Hampden Estate over to Everglades Farms Ltd., a company owned by the Hussey family.
Everglades Farms has made significant investments in the estates since the acquisition, created jobs throughout Trelawny, and offered significant financial and other infrastructure support to more than 17 communities and schools.
The first formal commercial bottlings were released in 2018, marking a world premiere and ushering in a new era for premium rums.
The wide range of brands the distillery produces is one of many elements that contribute to the rich diversity of Hampden Estate's rums.
Each mark denotes a freshly produced spirit with a unique, distinctive style, aromatic intensity, flavour profile, body, and structure that was produced by adhering to a predetermined formula in terms of the raw materials utilized, fermentation period, procedures, and distillation.
The Boiling House is dedicated to fermentation; The procedure takes place in wooden vats with slatted sides that speak of the passage of time and lasts between 8 and 15 days. The wild yeasts that thrive and proliferate in the fermentation chambers are responsible for this.
After the Boiling House, there are the distillery's four distinctive pot stills, which are Hampden's pride and joy.
The first, a John Dore, was put in place in 1960 and has a capacity of 2,000 gallons (7,560 litres).
The sole still that overlooks the sugarcane fields that surround the distillery is The Vendome, which was built in 1994 and has a capacity of 5,000 gallons (18,900 litres). It is situated on a "covered veranda" and dates back to that time.
In 2010, the Forsyth still began operation with a 5,000-gallon capacity. In 2016, a fourth pot was added to the group; it was made by the South African company TNT and can hold 5,000 gallons.
The Hampden Distillery is probably one of the best in the world and this is based on its 5 Pillars of fundamentals.
They produce a variety of pure single rums. They are:
Of these 8, the Rum Fire is the most popular on the island. Because it is a white rum, it is used in many juices, cocktails and traditional baked products.
If you would love to experience the distillery up close and in person that is possible. The estate offers a tour that teaches you about its rich history, you can tour the grounds, have lunch and taste test the products, all in one package.
In fact, we took a tour of the grounds and sampled the spirits ourselves.
