Caribbean Maritime University is the only university on our island with a focus on maritime education and training. It all started when a joint committee was established in 1979 our government and the government of Norway to assess the viability of establishing a merchant marine training facility on the island.  The institute's goal was to develop officers for the government-owned Jamaican Merchant Marine, a small fleet of ships.

The Jamaica Maritime Institute Act, which gave the Institute a legal foundation, was approved by the Jamaican Parliament in January 1993.
