Caribbean Maritime University is the only university on our island with a focus on maritime education and training. It all started when a joint committee was established in 1979 our government and the government of Norway to assess the viability of establishing a merchant marine training facility on the island. The institute's goal was to develop officers for the government-owned Jamaican Merchant Marine, a small fleet of ships.

On September 15, 1980, the Jamaica Maritime Training Institute (JMTI) started its inaugural semester. The Jamaica Maritime Institute Act, which gave the Institute a legal foundation, was approved by the Jamaican Parliament in January 1993. The statute was changed in 2001 to reflect the regional nature of the student body and the training by changing the name to the Caribbean Maritime Institute (CMI).
The university has several faculties, offering many different programs. These include:
This faculty leads academic initiatives focused on a culture of applied research that is driven by engineering-led research. It focuses on cross-cutting, globally applicable growth sectors such as biotechnology, alternative energy, robotics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and electrical engineering. The University Council of Jamaica (UCJ) and the Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges, and Universities (ASIC UK) have recognised these programs.
For those looking to pursue a profession in shipping, this faculty's programs would be the best option. Students who participate in these programs receive training in the fundamentals and theories of nautical studies and management-level shipboard operations.
This Faculty primarily caters to two groups of students: those looking for alternate routes to higher education and business professionals looking to expand their professional knowledge in a range of fields. Occupational degrees, foundation courses, and government-sponsored programs are examples of alternative career paths. Customized industry-based courses are also available that are designed to meet the needs of different types of individuals and organizations across different industries. Programs include:
This faculty offers courses in logistics, international trade, security, channel coordination, immigration, shipping, security, and port management. These Undergraduate programs equip students for entry-level and middle-level positions in various industries, while graduate programs provide higher-level competencies for competitiveness in a global marketplace.
While each program has its specific requirements, the basic requirement for entry into the university includes a minimum of 5 CSEC subjects. Applications can be submitted online.
