PayPal is one of, if not the largest, online financial companies. They operate across the globe and are one of the fastest and most secure ways to send and receive money.

Yes. But, there is a “but”. In Jamaica, you can sign up for a PayPal account for personal or business use. You will be able to use your PayPal account to receive online payments, receive money from other PayPal users and send money as well.
So where does the “but” come in, you may ask? In some countries, the United States and Canada being prime examples, PayPal users can connect their bank account to their PayPal account which facilitates transfers between both accounts.
Unfortunately, for those in Jamaica and some other countries, that is not a possibility. Paypal does not allow account users living in Jamaica to connect their bank accounts to their accounts.
However, if you will be using your PayPal account for online shopping purposes, you have the option of adding debit or credit cards issued from Jamaican banks to your account.
How does this work, right? Well, it’s quite simple. Once you follow all the prompts for adding your credit or debit card, and PayPal accepts the information you will be able to make online purchases.
For example, if you are making a payment on Amazon for $50 but only have a balance of 10 dollars in your PayPal account, you will still be able to make the purchase. As long as the remaining $40 is available on your card, PayPal will take that amount to complete your purchase.
And yes, even if you had nothing in your PayPal wallet, they would take the necessary amount from your debit or credit card.
This secures your card information and protects against the risk of fraudulent activities since you won't be inputting your personal information on websites.
To link your debit or credit card, you must correctly input your full name, address, card number and cv number. PayPal will work on the back end to verify this information which typically only takes a few seconds.
Gone are the days when leaving home was the only way to make a living. Now there are many Jamaicans who work from home or use a variety of online platforms and websites to supply an income. Paypal is one of the most popular accepted payment options for online companies.
Since you won’t be able to transfer money from your PayPal to your bank account, this may pose a challenge for some. But all is not lost, as with everything, there is a way around this. As a matter of fact, there are several ways around this, but I will share with you the least hassling method.
Small companies here in Jamaica will cash out your PayPal balance for you. You will be required to send them the amount you wish to cash out from your PayPal account to theirs. Depending on the amount, some take between 5% to 10% service charge. They will then transfer the money to your local bank account in Jamaican Dollars. This usually takes around 3 business days.
Yes and no. While you cannot directly link your NCB bank account to your Paypal account, you can link your NCB VISA debit and credit cards to your PayPal account. The same applies to all other Jamaican bank-issued VISA or Mastercards.
Paypal is not for everyone, but for persons who are active online, it can be a lifesaver. Making purchases or receiving payments from multiple sources is a great way to secure your banking details.
For people who would rather not pay a fee to transfer their money to their bank accounts, there are other online companies similar to PayPal.
Payoneer and Wise (previously known as Tranferwise) are also online banking services available to Jamaicans.
