british citizenship for jamaicans born before 1962

Question about: British citizen by jamaican birth before 1962?

I was told by someone that because I was born before Jamaica got it’s independence in 1962 from Great Britain I am a British citizen as well.

Is that true?

If it’s so, how can I go about getting some form of documentation which will clarify that.

Hey Marjorie, thanks for asking!

I inquired of the British High Commission in Kingston and was advised that the best way to determine British citizenship was to complete an online check at their UK government's website.

Go to..

1. https://www.gov.uk/
   
2. In the search bar, type "british citizenship"
   
3. Look through the search results for 'Check if you're a British citizen'
   
4. Click on that link and follow the instructions from there.
