7:34 pm: In an interview with TVJ, Prof Simon Mitchell, a Sedimentary Geologist, warns that we can expect several aftershocks for up to 60 days.
They also report that this earthquake is the strongest in Jamaica in the last 31 years.
Major damage was reported in some rural areas, particularly Portland. In one case, a three-story building became 2-storey as the base crumbled.
7:27 pm: Another strong aftershock was reported felt in the Kingston area again. In fact, according to local reports, perhaps close to 20 aftershocks have been experienced.
2:34 pm: An aftershock was reportedly felt in the Mona area of Kingston.
1:15 pm: In an interview on the local radio station, Regional Director of the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA), Errol Greene reported that the Bustamante Hospital saw a surge in cases of children visiting for trauma cases and minor injuries.
Some schools in the corporate area were dismissed early.
Reports also that it has impacted other countries in the region.
According to the USGS, the epicenter of the quake was about 4km West North West of Hope Bay here in Jamaica.
The exact location was 18.209°N 76.605°W and has a depth of 10km.
Early indications are that it is one of the largest ever felt here in recent times.
According to RJR news, they are getting reports that some powerlines are down, buildings were swaying, and out electricity in some areas, including Bull Bay and Old Harbour in St. Catherine.
There were also reports that items fell from tables, shelves, and pictures from walls.
