The Great River is one of Jamaica's major waterways. It originates in the northwestern corner of St. Elizabeth and flows for approximately 57 miles (92 km) before emptying into the Caribbean Sea just west of Montego Bay. This river forms a natural boundary between the parishes of St. James, Westmoreland, and Hanover. Itโs known for its picturesque scenery and tranquil waters. Great River is also a popular spot for bamboo rafting, tubing, and ziplining in Montego Bay.
One of the standout tours on the Great River is offered by Unique Tours, which promises an authentic Jamaican bamboo rafting experience. Visitors embark on a 30-foot-long hand-crafted bamboo raft, expertly navigated by a certified raft captain. As you glide down the river, the lush, bamboo-lined banks provide a serene backdrop, enhancing your sense of relaxation.
The tour includes a limestone foot massage, a local tradition that leaves your skin feeling silky smooth. Known as creating "Jungle Socks," this unique treatment is both rejuvenating and invigorating. Along the journey, your raft captain will share fascinating insights into Jamaica's vibrant history and diverse culture, making this an educational as well as a leisurely experience.
This is just one of the popular tour companies that is known for offering the Bamboo Rafting experience at the Great River. However, even if you choose not to work with a tour company, you can show up to Great River and in most cases you will find independent tour guides and rafters who will take you on a tour for a small cost.
The next known river for rafting in Montego Bay is Lethe. Lethe is a rural district nestled in the hills of Hanover. This small community is set along the banks of the Great River and is steeped in natural beauty and rich cultural history. Lethe ranks as the third most popular rafting destination in Jamaica, following the Rio Grande and Martha Brae rivers.
Chukka, one of our most popular luxury attractions and excursion companies in Jamaica, offers an exceptional rafting tour in Lethe, combining adventure with cultural immersion. Located on a former banana plantation estate, the 200-acre property features beautiful gardens and lush valleys. The Chukka expedition includes a unique twist with Reggae music serenading you throughout your journey, enhancing the experience with local flavour.
As a Guest, you will float down the Lethe River on a hand-crafted bamboo raft, piloted by an expert captain. The tour also includes a traditional limestone foot rub and a choice of beverages: a bottle of prosecco with flutes or bottles of cold Red Stripe beer. This "limo on the river" experience is designed to leave guests with lasting memories of the tranquil surroundings and the rich cultural tapestry of rural Jamaica.
As mentioned above with Great River, Chukka is just a great option if you want to work with a tour company, but you will also find independent tour guides at the Lethe River.
Bamboo rafting on the Great River and Lethe River offers an unparalleled way to explore Jamaica's natural beauty and cultural heritage. These tours provide not only a scenic journey through verdant landscapes but also an opportunity to engage with local traditions and learn about the island's history and flora.
Whether you are looking for relaxation, adventure, or a blend of both, bamboo rafting in Montego Bay is an experience that promises to be unforgettable. From the soothing rhythm of the river to the expert guidance of knowledgeable raft captains, every moment spent on these bamboo rafts is a celebration of Jamaica's natural and cultural riches.
